Subject to funding we put on a summer programme and provide activities during other academic breaks to give continuity to our term-time work and to ensure that all the young Travellers we are in contact with participate in activities. We take groups of different ages to a range of locally organised activities to which they would not normally have access.
The young people we work with thus receive much-needed support in exploring their cultural identity, developing their ability to express themselves positively within the wider community, raising their awareness of their own and others’ needs, and gaining new skills in creative and physical pursuits.
Active support and encouragement to access mainstream and specialist services, including education, careers advice and vocational training, are offered on an ongoing basis to all the young people that we work with. Referrals are made where appropriate to other agencies.
Project Aims:
Another very successful summer programme for 2010, covering a three week period. There were over 80 young people participating in a wide range of activities such as: Canoeing, Horse Riding, Orienteering, Bike Riding, Banana Boating, Rock Climbing, High Ropes, Wobble Boarding, and educational visits to: Paradise Wildlife Park, Natural History Museum/Butterfly Explorers and Tottenham Marshes Fun Day.
The programme has been the perfect opportunity for the participants to face new challenges and learn a wide range of new skills, whilst having fun amongst friends in the great outdoors. It was great to see many of the young people overcome their fears in various situations, and try their hand at something they were previously reluctant to try.
